Accessibility
We want the museum website to be easy to use for every visitor, including people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive disabilities.

Conformance level
The site is built to the international standard WCAG 2.2 (level AA) and the Ukrainian standard DSTU EN 301 549:2022. For communal institutions these requirements are only recommended (Resolution No. 757 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine of 21 July 2023), but we follow them voluntarily.
The site has not had an independent accessibility audit yet. We check pages with automated tools (axe) and by hand: with the keyboard only, with text enlarged to 200%, and on a screen 320 pixels wide. For that reason we do not claim full conformance; we list the known limitations instead.
This statement was prepared on 19 October 2026.
What has been done
- Every page can be used with a keyboard; the focus is always visible, and each page starts with a “Skip to main content” link.
- Pages have a clear structure: headings in order, landmarks (header, menu, main content, footer), labelled navigation and filters.
- Links are underlined; colours have enough contrast, and colour is never the only cue — there is always text or a marker next to it.
- Buttons and links are at least 44 pixels in size.
- Text can be enlarged to 200%; on narrow screens (from 320 pixels) pages reflow without horizontal scrolling.
- Images have alternative text; the language of the text is marked, including for publications in Russian.
- The number of search and filter results is announced to screen readers.
Known limitations
This is what is not fully accessible yet. If you need any of it in another form, write to us.
- 3D models. The viewer works with a mouse, touch and the keyboard (the arrow keys rotate the model), but the shape of an object is not described for screen readers. A text description of the object is on the same page.
- Book scans. Pages of old books are shown as images with zoom; there is no text recognition yet.
- PDF files. About 660 research publications from the museum’s archive are available as PDF. Scans were recognised automatically, so the text may contain errors; the structure of the files (tags, bookmarks) does not always meet the requirements for accessible PDF. For some publications the full text is also on the page.
- Video. Not every video has subtitles or a text transcript.
- Third-party services. YouTube videos, the OpenStreetMap map, the Prozorro procurement list and virtual exhibitions on other sites come from other services, and we do not control their accessibility. Embedded material has a link next to it to open it on its own page.
- Texts in Russian. Some research publications are written in Russian; they are marked with the right language but not translated.
