Description

Printed in 1899.

The binding was made at Molchadsky's factory in Kharkiv.

Printed in a single color. The text is in Church Slavonic. Letter and numeric pagination appears at the top and bottom of the pages. The book's decoration is complemented by numerous headpieces and two tailpieces. The book's cover is of stiff cardboard, covered in gray calico. Around the perimeter of the front cover is a blind-stamped frame with a floral branch in the corners and, at the center, the title "Uchebnyi Chasoslov" ("Study Book of Hours"). The back cover is decorated around its perimeter with a linear frame with geometric motifs in the corners.

The Book of Hours was acquired by the museum from Volodymyr Stepanovych Cherviakov of Kharkiv in 1979.

Note: the Book of Hours (Horologion) is a liturgical book containing Orthodox prayers and church chants for the daily church services.

This educational Book of Hours is a so-called "small" Horologion, which was specially published for the purpose of teaching reading.

Molchadsky's factory in Kharkiv was the "Printing House, Press, and Bindery of Gershen Berkovich (G. B.) Molchadsky." It was located in the central part of Kharkiv at Petrovsky Lane, No. 11 (today Korolenko Lane).
