Description

Takes the form of an elongated band with widened ends. The front is made of pink satin fabric with a matte floral pattern (roses with branches and leaves); along the edges and at the center are three Latin crosses, worked in gold galloon.

The reverse is lined with pink silk fabric.

The maniple entered the museum's holdings in 1949. It was used in the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Note: the maniple (from Latin manipulus — "a handful of hay") is a component of the liturgical vestments of a Catholic priest. It is a band of fabric about a meter long and 5–10 cm wide, with a cross embroidered at the center. It is worn on the left arm during the Liturgy, secured with ties or pins, and made of silk. Wearing the maniple is permitted to clergy no lower in rank than subdeacon. A bishop puts on the maniple before the prayer Confiteor ("I confess") at the altar. Other clergy put it on before the Liturgy. It originally served as a handkerchief for the priest, later becoming a liturgical vestment.

After the Second Vatican Council, the maniple is no longer obligatory for use during the Liturgy.
