Description

The object is a wide, semicircular, sleeveless cloak-vestment, fastened at the front at chest level. The front is of cruciform brocade fabric with a light-green ground and silver pattern; the edges of the vestment and the vertical borders are trimmed with silver galloon bearing a floral-cruciform ornament. The clasp is decorated with two metal hooks with shaped overlays, whose field bears lush acanthus leaves (colored enamels). On the back of the cope is sewn a stylized "hood" — a separate, semicircular element, bordered with galloon and decorated along its lower edge with silver fringe.

On the reverse, the cope is lined with pink cotton fabric.

The object entered the museum's holdings in 1956.

Note: the cope (or pluvial) is a long, sleeveless ceremonial cloak used as a liturgical vestment in the Catholic, Anglican, and some Protestant churches. It takes the form of a long, flared cloak, open at the front and fastened at the chest with a clasp (a plate or clasp-band). It is worn during solemn services, processions, vespers, or blessings, but not during the Mass itself (when the priest wears the phelonion/chasuble). The colors of the cope vary according to the church calendar and feast (white, green, red, purple, and so on).
