Embroidered towels, shirts and napkins from the museum collection have been digitised for the first time: Slobozhanshchyna embroidery can now be explored online.

“Sloboda Ukraine Code. Ukrainian Embroidery” is a project of the M. F. Sumtsov Kharkiv Historical Museum in partnership with the NGO KLIO HUB, supported by the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.
The goal of the project is to popularise traditional Sloboda Ukraine embroidery as an essential part of Ukrainian cultural heritage. For the first time, a unique collection of embroidered rushnyks, shirts, napkins and other household items from the museum’s holdings has been digitised and made accessible to the public.
The project has produced a digital multimedia catalogue and a virtual 3D exhibition. The materials are available online through a website and an app for VR devices, so the objects can be seen and studied from anywhere.
The project is especially important for the people of Sloboda Ukraine, internally displaced persons, researchers, educators, artists and the Ukrainian diaspora. It aims to preserve national identity, promote understanding of Ukraine’s cultural diversity and inspire modern design rooted in tradition.
The project was carried out by specialists in ethnology, museum studies, information technology and design. Its partner is the Korolenko Kharkiv State Scientific Library.
“Sloboda Ukraine Code” is a bridge between past and future — a new perspective on embroidery as a cultural code preserved in digital form.
