The collection and its descriptions
Is every museum object on this site?
No. The museum’s holdings number more than 330,000 objects, and the site shows only those that have already been described and digitised. The catalogue grows gradually. For objects that are not online, see Working with the holdings.
Why do the descriptions differ so much?
Records come from several of the museum’s source databases and are digitised gradually. Some objects therefore have a long description, photographs and a 3D model, while others have only a title and an inventory number. The page works with any record: empty sections are not shown.
What does an inventory number such as Тк-3338 mean?
The inventory number is the object’s number in the museum’s registers. Its letter part shows the group of holdings: Тк — textiles, М — metal, Ж — painting and graphics. You can find an object by its number in the search, and in the page address it is written in Latin letters (tk-3338).
Why is part of the text on an English page in Ukrainian?
We translate the museum’s descriptions gradually. Until a translation exists, the English page shows the Ukrainian text: it is marked as Ukrainian, and a notice at the top of the page says so.
Search, photographs and 3D
How do I find an object?
Use the search on the Collection page: search by title, a word from the description, place, material, dating or inventory number (Latin letters work too). You can narrow the results to objects with photographs, with a 3D model or with an embroidery pattern. Each group of holdings also has filters by type of object.
May I download and use the photographs?
Yes. Collection photographs are available under the CC BY 4.0 licence, with a credit to the museum. The terms are shown on each object’s page, and the general ones in the terms of use. Every object page has a “Download photo” button.
How do I control a 3D model?
Drag the model with the mouse or swipe to rotate it; the scroll wheel or two fingers zoom. Without a mouse, the arrow keys rotate the model and the + and − keys zoom in and out. Every 3D model has a text description and ordinary photographs.
What are the embroidery patterns?
Fifty objects of the “Ukrainian Embroidery” project have cross-stitch patterns. You can see a pattern on the object’s page and download it for printing, or find them all in Embroidery patterns.
For researchers
How do I cite an object?
Every object page has a “How to cite” block with a ready bibliographic entry and a “Copy link” button for the page’s permanent address.
Can I get an object’s data for catalogues and research?
Yes. Every object has metadata in LIDO XML (in Ukrainian and English): the “LIDO XML” link is in the “How to cite” block of the object page. An example: Тк-3338.
I know more about an object, or I found a mistake. Where do I write?
Write to the museum using its contacts and give the object’s inventory number.
Can I download the whole catalogue?
Yes. The Open data page has a table of objects (CSV and JSON Lines) and records in the LIDO standard. The files are rebuilt every night.
How can I work with objects that are not online?
You need a written request addressed to the director of the museum, saying what you are interested in and why. Details are on the page Working with the holdings.
